That's the E&N multi-use rail trail. The railway has new owners-it's you, me and your neighbours through local governments and Island First Nations through the new Island Corridor Foundation. They share our vision of a vibrant transportation corridor that includes a new cycling and walking trail along this historic corridor. Rail trails are already at work in other communities, as close as White Rock and Nanaimo.

The CRD and local governments already support the vision. Now we need to convince provincial and federal governments that this is a project worth investing in.

More on the Project

WRITE! More funding is needed to help build the E&N rail trail.

The Capital Regional District has applied for additional funds to help build this important multi-use trail facility. It’s a 17 kilometer off-road corridor shared with an active railway line. It’s a model that works across North America.

With challenging gaps and a longer trail planned to connect to the Trans Canada trail, the project is more costly than early estimates. Still, it’s very good value. Estimates from Britain peg the return on investment at anywhere from 15:1 t 33:1. We already know that our Galloping Goose and Lochside trails in Greater Victoria are growing participation in cycling and helping to make use the healthiest city in Canada.

A federal gas tax program aimed at supporting green infrastructure is helping to fund much of the project, but the province has yet to contribute. We need to let the decision makers know that this is an important investment for commuters, for cycling tourism and for others interested in healthy and active transportation.
